Glenn Bell, age 91, of Giltner, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, August 11th at the Giltner United Methodist Church. Rev. Mahlon Richardson will officiate. Interment will be in the Giltner Cemetery with full Military Rites. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Giltner United Methodist Church. OBITUARY: GLENN BELL
Glenn Verlin Bell, the son of Frank and Chloe (Davis) Bell, was born on May 17, 1925 at Giltner, Nebraska and passed away at Grand Island, Nebraska on August 6, 2016, at the age of 91.
Glenn grew up in Giltner and attended Giltner Public School. He entered the U.S. Navy in May of 1943 and served his country during WW II. Glenn was honorably discharged in September of 1946. He returned to Giltner to farm.
Glenn was united in marriage to Helen Spath on November 24, 1948 in Aurora. They moved to Giltner in 1950 where they farmed and raised their five children. Helen passed away on March 14, 2008.
Glenn was a member of the Giltner United Methodist Church, past member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion, the Giltner Rural Fire Board and Giltner Lyons Club Charter Member. Outside of his love for farming, Glenn was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time on Bush Island on the Platte River where he hunted, fished and enjoyed nature. He loved helping others, and enjoyed sharing his garden produce in the summer with family, neighbors and friends. Glenn and his wife Helen of 59 years enjoyed dancing for added entertainment throughout their married life. Glenn enjoyed bowling, and playing his harmonica, which was self-taught. Glenn was a friend to all who knew him.
Those who remain to cherish his memory are his son, Patrick (Peggy) Bell of Giltner; three daughters, Glenda (Mike) Hawthorne of Aurora, Janet (John) Golon of Collierville, TN and Julie Olson of York; 11 grandchildren: Dana (Todd) DeVries of Aurora, Heather (Ben) O’Neill of Lincoln, Darla (Justin) Roche of Waterloo, Eric (Carrie) Bell of Lexington, Kyle (Julie) Bell of Lincoln, Kelly (Caleb) Schelkopf of Giltner, AJ Golon of Memphis, TN, Hillary (Aaron) Mundt of Polk, Lindsay Hurtz of Elkhorn, Natalie Olson of Omaha and Phoebe (Scott) Johnson of McCool Junction and 18 great grandchildren: Megan & Blake DeVries, Olivia & Nolan O’Neill, Bentley, Harper & Cash Roche, Wyatt Troudt, Sawyer Mundt, Marcus Hurtz, Bailey & Brooklyn Johnson, MacKenna, Chason & Cailynn Bell and Tanner, Benson & Chloe Schelkopf. He is also survived by a sister, Edna Ruth Marler of Otis, LA; four sisters-in-law, Laurine Bell of Aurora, Doris Bieck of Giltner, Judy Topham of Princeton, IL and Jackie Spath of Grand Island and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Chris Lee; son-in-law, Ben Olson; great grandson, Carson; parents; and three brothers, Donald, Clarence and Homer Bell.
