Doris Menke

Doris Menke, age 97, of Aurora, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2017, at CHI-St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, September 22nd at the United Methodist Church in Aurora. Rev. Karla Sheffy will officiate. Interment will be in the Diller Prairie Home Cemetery at 2:30 P.M. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 P.M. Thursday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in care of the Aurora United Methodist Church or the Ellis United Methodist Church. Doris D. Menke, the daughter of Clarence and Cora (Gasford) Mann, was born in Jefferson County, Nebraska on June 8, 1920 and passed away in Grand Island, Nebraska on September 18, 2017, at the age of 97.

She grew up on the family farm and attended country school and graduated from Beatrice High School 1938.

Doris was united in marriage to Kenneth Menke on November 19, 1938 at Marysville, Kansas. Doris worked 17 years at the Beatrice State Development Center. They moved to Hamilton County in 1956 and returned back to Gage County in 1965. In 1997, they moved to Aurora. Kenneth passed away on March 26, 2003.

Doris was a member of the Ellis United Methodist Church and the Women’s Society. She was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church, where she served in the Dorcas Circle. Quilting, sewing, gardening, spending time with grandkids, family get togethers and Cornhusker Football were things Doris enjoyed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; daughter & son-in-law, Sondra & Dale Cudaback; two great-grandchildren, four brothers and eight sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Lanny Menke and his wife Merna of Marquette and Brad Menke and his wife Marilyn of Grand Island; daughter, Ardith Smith and her husband Tom of Kearney; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Letty Phelps of Lincoln and many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
