Donald M. Miller

Donald Miller, age 89, of Aurora, NE passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at the Veterans Medical Center in Grand Island, NE.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 22 at the Westside Covenant Church, 1009 1st Street, Aurora, NE. Pastor Karl Larson will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Due to Covid-19 the current CDC guidelines will be followed and face masks are required. Memorials may be made to Westside Covenant Church or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. OBITUARY: DONALD MILLER

Donald Morris Miller, the son of Peter and Edna (Koehler) Miller, was born on December 28, 1930 and died in Grand Island, Nebraska on August 12, 2020 at the age of 89. He was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Harvard, NE.

Don grew up on the family farm and graduated from Aurora High School in 1949. He farmed with his father for several years before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 11, 1952. Don was stationed in Cuba and Iceland during the Korean War. He took great pride in serving our country and enjoyed his time in the Navy. Don was honorably discharged on February 7, 1956.

Don was an active member of the Westside Covenant Church in Aurora. He had a strong love for farming and the hard work that came with it. He enjoyed spending time with his family and regularly attended the sporting events of his children and grandchildren. Don also enjoyed mentoring his children in sporting activities and loved watching Husker football. He enjoyed playing cards (pitch) with his family and due to his competitive nature he would usually win. His legacy was teaching his children the value of hard work, and to always treat others with kindness and respect. Everyone who grew up with Don recognized him as an outstanding athlete as well as a great friend.

Don was united in marriage to LaVerda Dadey on May 18, 1952 in Aurora. They were married 59 years. Don and LaVerda created a wonderful life together on their family farm south of Aurora where they raised their seven children. LaVerda passed away on December 9, 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Harold Miller, Alvin Miller, and Jack Miller; an infant son Leland Miller, and grandson Derek Schultze.

Those left to cherish his memory are his three sons, Rick (Sherri) Miller of Aurora, Russell (Tara) Miller of Phillips, and Duane (Laurie) Miller of Lincoln; four daughters, Linda (Rob) Glahe of Wheaton, Illinois, Kathy Lawton of Aurora, Marcia Miller of Aurora, and Shelly (Matt) Schultze of Overland Park, Kansas; 16 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters. He is also survived by a sister, Virginia Church of Clarks, NE and brother-in-law, Ed Dadey of Marquette, NE and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
