Fern Nilson, age 92, of Aurora, passed away Friday, December 23, 2016, at the Mary Lanning Medical Center in Hastings.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 28th at Pleasant View Bible Church in Aurora. Rev. Bob Gannon & Rev. Paul Nauman will officiate. Interment will be in Aurora Cemetery at 9:00 A.M. prior to the church service. Visitation will be 5 – 7 P.M. Tuesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Pleasant View Bible Church. OBITUARY: FERN NILSON
Fern Loree Nilson, the daughter of Gustaf and Hazel (Wollam) Miller, was born at Stratton, Nebraska, on June 29, 1924, and passed away at Hastings, Nebraska, on December 23, 2016, at the age of 92.
She grew up in Stratton and graduated from Stratton High School at the age of 16. Fern taught 4th grade in Stratton and Trenton. She moved to Lincoln, where she taught school and met Erick, who was attending the University of Nebraska working on his M.S. Degree.
On March 14, 1955, she was united in marriage to Erick Bogseth Nilson at Stratton, Nebraska. They had two children: Edwin and Christine. During their married life they lived in several states: Washington, Iowa, New Mexico and Kansas to accommodate Erick’s career. After Erick retired from Kansas State University on July 1, 1989, they returned to Aurora. Erick passed away on March 13, 1990.
Erick and Fern served as the first Faculty Advisors to Campus Crusade for Christ, positions they held for 18 years. Fern was instrumental in starting Christian Women’s Clubs in Kansas and Nebraska. She worked with Shirley Dobson on the National Day of Prayer Task Force. Fern was the author of two books, “History of Prayer in America” and “My Life on the Prairie.” She enjoyed sharing the Christmas and Easter stories with church and Bible Study groups. Fern was a member of the Pleasant View Bible Church. Fern’s hobbies included her flowers, speaking engagements, playing the piano, and bird watching.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Edna Pierce and a brother, Maurice Miller.
Those who remain to cherish her memory are her son Edwin of Aurora; one daughter Christine Nilson of Bristol, Connecticut; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Verna May of Michigan and other relatives and friends.
