Mildred Sands

Mildred Sands, age 105, of Aurora, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016 at the Hamilton Manor.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 22nd at the Monroe Evangelical Free Church. Rev. Bob Stretch will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 P.M. Monday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date. OBITUARY: MILDRED SANDS

Mildred I. Sands, the daughter of Henning and Anna Christinia (Johanson) Carlson, was born at Osceola, Nebraska, on August 22, 1910, and passed away at Aurora, Nebraska, on March 18, 2016, at the age of 105.

Mildred’s family lived on the farm northwest of Stromsburg. At the age of four, when her father died, the family moved into Stromsburg. She attended District #48 Country School thru the 8th grade. Mildred graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1929. She worked as a sales clerk in the local retail store in Stromsburg.

On November 12, 1938, she was united in marriage to Clarence P. Sands at Stromsburg. They lived on the family farm northwest of Aurora. In 1977, they moved to 1012 7th Street in Aurora. Clarence passed away on February 5, 1988. In her later years, Mildred enjoyed working at Monets Dress Shop. Mildred lived in her own home until the last year and 8 months, at which time she moved to the Hamilton Manor.

She was a member of the Stromsburg Covenant Church. After her marriage to Clarence they attended the Monroe Evangelical Free Church, where she was active in many of the women’s groups and activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Edward Johnson; 3 brothers, Kenneth, Carl and Leo Johnson and a sister, Violet McKeag.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are two sons, Larry (Nancy) Sands of Grand Island and Robert (Susie) Sands of Hastings; 5 grandchildren, Tera (Anthony) Carlson of Shawnee, Kansas, Ryan (Jamie) Sands of Marquette, Michelle (Brian) Strom of Hastings, John Sands of Atlanta, Georgia and Michael (Shannon) Sands of Omaha; 9 great-grandchildren, Evan and Nora Strom, Eden, Mia and Quinn Carlson, Roman and Eve Sands and Lucy and Kate Sands and many other relatives and friends.
