Marian Smith

Marian Smith, age 92, of Stromsburg, formerly of Aurora, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 15th at the Aurora Evangelical Covenant Church. Rev. Karl Larson will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 P.M. Friday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Memorials may be made in care of the family to be designated at a later date. OBITUARY: MARIAN SMITH

Marian Virginia Smith, the daughter of Walter and Hazel (Snodgrass) Earhart, was born in Tama County, Iowa on July 20, 1926 and passed away in Stromsburg, Nebraska on December 11, 2018, at the age of 92.

Marian grew up in Garwin, Iowa, first attending a country school. Marian moved to Des Moines, Iowa with her sisters and mother after the family lost her father in a work accident. Marian graduated from Roosevelt High in Des Moines. She first worked as an usher in a theater, then pursued her passion with horses, training & showing for local owners, then was a teller for a Des Moines Bank.

On May 22, 1954, she was united in marriage to Donald William Smith. Donald worked at Phillips Petroleum, while at Phillips Petroleum they lived in Norwalk, Iowa and Audubon, Iowa before moving to Aurora, Nebraska in 1967. Donald retired from Phillips Petroleum after 30 years of service. Marian was a stay at home mom for their children, Stephen and Cathy and when the children were grown, she picked up clerical work and cleaning work for friends. Donald passed away on May 2, 2010.

Marian was a member of Aurora’s Garden Club for many, many years and later in Grand Island’ China Painters. Marian loved flower gardening and painted china and oil paintings for many years. She was an incredibly prolific artist. Her eye for color, design and all the beauty God provides us lives on in a really remarkable collection of art. Marian was the best pie baker, having a vast experience after baking her first pie at the age of 10.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and three sisters, Eunice Smith, Cathern Lovstad and Shirley Rodgers.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two children, Stephen W. (Mary) Smith of Phoenix, Arizona and Cathy (Scott) Johnson of Stromsburg; granddaughter, Mackenzie (Lance) Carstens of North Platte; grandson, Nathan Green of Lincoln; great-granddaughter, Corena Carstens of North Platte, and nieces and nephews and other family members and friends.
