Janice Thomas, age 79, of Aurora, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2020, at Westfield Quality Care.
Harry & Janice Thomas, were laid to rest together at the Hordville Cemetery on Friday, May 29, 2020. They only passed away 12 days apart. Janice on April 24th and Harry on May 6th. Their family plans to hold a Celebration of Life service for them at the Messiah Lutheran Church at a later date. Memorials may be made to any of their favorite charities, The VA, the Messiah Lutheran Church of Aurora or the Memorial Hospital Thrift Shop. OBITUARY: JANICE THOMAS
Janice Emma Thomas, the daughter of J. Ludvig & Clara (Jurgens) Bengtson, was born in Hordville, Nebraska on May 17, 1940 and passed away on April 24, 2020 at the age of 79.
Janice grew up and attended school in Hordville. She became a nurse's aide in Columbus and worked as a receptionist for Dr. Treptow in Central City before becoming a student at Immanuel Lutheran School of Nursing in Omaha. She then moved to California where she attended Peel's Beauty College and worked as a cosmetologist for 12 years. She decided to complete her Registered Nursing degree at Moorpark College, worked for a year in Camarillo as a R.N. then moved back to Nebraska where she worked and retired (2006) as a R.N. at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Janice married Harry James Thomas on December 11, 1976 at Thousand Oaks, CA and they moved to Aurora, NE in 1986.
She was a very active member of the Fridhem Lutheran Church early on. She also served her churches while in CA, before returning to Aurora and joining the Messiah Lutheran Church. She participated in and enjoyed years of square dancing in Thousand Oaks, CA. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and decorating, but her greatest accomplishment was being a wonderful mother, wife, sister, friend and ENCOURAGER.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Coleen Elida Hellstrom; infant brother, Ludvig Merlin Bengtson; brothers, Willis Bengtson, J. Merlin Bengtson, Deryl Goedeken, Milburn (Gene) Fowler, Dennis Weeks, and sisters, Iola Fowler, Mildred Bengtson and Janice Bengtson.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Harry; children, Jackie (Darryl) Chapman, Kathie (Dan) Sperow, Mike Thomas and Timothy Thomas all of CA and Christy (Mike) Dumond of CO; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers & sisters, Jerrold Bengtson of ID, Marjorie Bengtson of York, Garnet Goedeken of Columbus, Dorothy Weeks of Omaha, Larry & Sue Bengtson and Lucile Bengtson of Aurora, Dale & Penny Bengtson of Hordville and many more nieces & nephews.
