Leo Goertzen

Leo A. Goertzen, age 92, of Aurora, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Westfield Quality Care in Aurora surrounded by his extended family.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, September 14 at the United Methodist Church in Aurora. Rev. Michelle Reed will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the church, 1104 A St. Memorials may be made to the family to designate at a later date. Leo was born May 11, 1930, in Stockham, Nebraska to Abraham J. and Minnie Friesen Goertzen. He served during the Korean War, stationed in Germany with his brother Milton. After his discharge, he worked as an auto technician. Leo married Mavis Emeline Van Housen of Aurora on July 14, 1953 four days before leaving for his military tour. In July they celebrated 69 years of marriage.

Following his discharge from the Army, the couple moved to Plainwell, Michigan where he worked for the local Ford Dealership. After the birth of their son, Michael, the couple moved back to Aurora. They then welcomed the birth of daughter Deana soon after. Leo worked for Wortman Motor Company for 20 years; then joined Stan Allen Motors and worked there until his retirement in 1997. Following his retirement, he worked for Riverside Golf Course in Grand Island and then the City of Aurora. He was part of the mowing crew until he was 88. During retirement, wood working becoming a hobby making many projects for friends and family.

Leo felt it was important to give back to community. He served as a member of the Aurora Volunteer Department for over 30 years. Leo was also active in the Aurora chapters of the American Legion and VFW Post. He was a regular on the Color Guard for funerals and holidays.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham J. and Minnie Friesen Goertzen, brothers Milton and Everett Goertzen. He is survived by is wife, Mavis, son Michael (Teri) Goertzen, daughter Deana (Tim) Anderson, 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, brothers Johnny (Donna) Goertzen, Denton Goertzen, sisters Josephine Troutman, Elizabeth Bicknase, Amanda (Marvin) Williams, Marlene (Bob) Watton and Sister-in-law Erma Goertzen, and many Nieces, Nephews and Friends.
