Darrell Niles

Darrell Niles, age 92, of Aurora, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Memorial Community Care.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 9th at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Aurora, NE. Rev. Mark Seiker will be the Celebrant. Interment will be at the Red Cloud Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. A Rosary will be at 7:00, following the visitation. Memorials may be made to the family to designate at a later date. Higby-McQuiston Funeral Home in Aurora is in charge of the arrangements. Darrell Everett Niles, the son of Hubert Everett and Gladys Opal (Young) Niles was born at Crystal Plains, Kansas on November 2, 1929 and passed away at Aurora, Nebraska on March 5, 2022 at the age of 92.

He grew up on a farm near Crystal Plains, KS attending school in Nebraska and graduating from Red Cloud High School. After graduation, Darrell worked for Kansas/Nebraska Natural Gas. He joined the U.S. Army where he served one year before being honorably discharged in 1949.

Darrell married Alice Elaine Bartley on October 6, 1951, at Red Cloud, NE. They had five children: Bradford, Rodney, Pamela, Cynthia and Julie. In 1951, Darrell started working at the Ammunition Depot in Grand Island. Two years later, he began working at CB & Q Railroad where he travelled with the railroad along with their three oldest children. In 1961, Darrell became a Division Lineman when he and his family moved to Centralia, Illinois where they remained until moving to Aurora, NE in 1965. Darrell retired in 1992 after working a total of 38 1/2 years with the railroad.

In 1981, Darrell built the family's home, and opened an antique shop in their basement the following year.

Darrell was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, fishing and playing pool. He especially enjoyed playing pool during the 20 winters he and Elaine spent in Arizona. The couple loved to travel, visiting all but three of the 50 states. Darrell especially loved spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Norma Schmidt and Lila Beth; son-in-law, Larry Matney; great-grandson, Keegan Matney and in-laws, Floyd & Eva Bartley.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Elaine of Aurora; five children, Bradford (Julie) Niles of Cozad, Rodney (Judy) Niles of Aurora, Pamela Matney of Aurora, Cynthia (Preston) McDaniels of Aurora and Julie (Kirk) Gustafson of Bloomington, IL; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Budd (Beth) Niles of Hampton and sister, Alice Boerder of Glen Allen, VA as well as numerous other relatives and friends who will cherish his memory.
